In Move #1, I dove into the The Golden Age of Hollywood beginning with the 1920s. I intended to uncover what professional reviewers’ and the general movie lovers’ opinions were on these films. I also wanted to investigate the early implementation of special effects in film and how they were used. Back then, such technology was in its infancy, and what was considered cutting-edge during that day pales by comparison to the special effects of  today. I chose Alan Crosland’s movie The Jazz Singer (1927) because it was the first movie to ever use sound, and for that time, sound was groundbreaking and captivated movie audiences like never before. This technology opened the door to many more advancements to come which I will trace through other early films in Hollywood.

The Main Thing That I Took Away:

  • People were more excited to see the talking special effects than they were to see the actual movie.

    • Special Effects made this movie successful
